Backtrack 5 years, our church in NJ always sang "Salve Regina" after Mass. It's the prayer Hail Holy Queen sung in Latin. It's a beautiful prayer. I might venture to say that I like it better than the Hail Mary. ::gasp::
Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy,
our Life, our Sweetness, and our Hope.
To Thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve.
To Thee do we send up our sighs mourning
and weeping in this valley of tears.
Turn then, most gracious Advocate,
Thine Eyes of Mercy toward us,
and after this our exile show us the
Blessed Fruit of thy Womb, Jesus.
O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.
Pray for us O Holy Mother of God
That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
I learned the lyrics from that NJ church, yes in Latin, and have adored the song since. It isn't sung as often at the church we are at now, but for whatever reason my interest has come back to it. I started singing "Salve Regina" around the house... you know... because it's normal to walk around singing in Latin. That's what all the cool moms do. :P I wanted to see if I still remembered the lyrics and when I realized that I did (!), I started singing it to Elizabeth at bedtime. She instantly quiets, sinks into me, and listens intently. I love singing it, she loves it, and it's prayer. Triple bonus!
So I think I've found my tried and true Lullaby: Salve Regina
(though I sing a bit faster than ^this^ version) ;)
Now I have the urge to learn the other Latin prayers/songs: Pater Noster (Our Father) and Tantum Ergo (I have no clue what this one is, but it's really pretty sung). :) We'll see... :)

It sure beats "Frosty the snowman" which I have to sing just about every night! We do a few songs, but Izzy is now starting to "sing" some of the words with me which just makes it totally awesome : )
And I was quite surprised that without even thinking about it (or realizing it), I still have the Hail Holy Queen prayer memorized.
I was thinking about this post again tonight when I was rocking Michael. I mentioned before that there are certain songs I sing to Izzy and I have been trying them out on him too. And none of "her" songs seemed to do it for him. But the past few nights I have sang "Hush Little Baby" and he instantly settles and closes his eyes. Guess I found his song : ) Now, I should probably learn the real words since I just make them up ; )
Awww that's really sweet. :) Hush Little Baby is a good one. None of the ones I sang for June worked for Josh either. Funny how that happens.
