The Great Potty Progression of 2012

Admittedly, a few weeks ago I felt pretty deflated in one aspect of my mothering: potty training.

I trained June at 2.  It took FOREVER.  There were still periods of accidents @ age 3.  The summer that he was 4, we had major pee accidents.  As a 5yo, we've dealt with not wanting to poop, resulting in poopy pants.  Also as a 5yo he still needed pull-ups at night.

I figured I did SOMETHING wrong bc June's training seemed to have gone horribly wrong. What kid takes 3 years to train and still has issues?!

So I decided that I would wait until I saw concrete readiness signs in Josh.  So I waited.  He turned 2.5, nothing.  He turned 3, nada.  He hit 3.5 and I began to get frustrated.  Really?!  3.5 and no signs of potty training?!  So at 3.75, something changed in *me.*

I was in Walmart buying June's overnight pull-ups, Josh's nighttime diapers and daytime diapers and Eliz's super absorbent nighttime diapers (until this pregnancy I was cloth diapering her during the day).  As my diaper total soared to about $80 (which would last me about a month or 2 in diapers), I realized that something had to change.

#1.  June *had* been able to wake up dry sometimes, so I started putting him in underwear.  I added a waterproof pad to his bed and hoped for the best.  We've had 2 accidents in about 3 weeks.  I count that a success.  June night diapers... done!

#2.  Onto Josh.  Enough is enough, diapers were GONE for Josh.  I took them away July 13th.  We had about 6-8 days of zero potty successes and lots of accidents.  The good news was that Josh could hold it long, but once the accidents started during the day, they kept coming.  On day 9 or 10, I saw a wailing Josh on the potty (I could tell he had to poop) and he... DID.  The next day we had 3 successes amid the accidents.  Yesterday (day 11) Josh was accident free.  He chose to go pee 3 times by himself and pooped once.  Today has been accident free as well.  I'm not claiming that he's trained yet but we've been 12 days no diapers except to sleep and it feels good to know that we are on our way.  PHEW!  He's getting really proud of his successes too which is awesome.

#3.  Well, #3 hasn't happened yet, but I'm going to try to potty train Eliz once Josh is consistently accident free.  My ultimate goal is to only have one in diapers come December.  So we'll see... she's young (just turned 2) so I know her process should be longer and more tedious, but she seems to be showing readiness signs (she tells me when she pees, she's interested in the potty and sitting on it, etc) so I'm ready to tackle her once we have Josh steady with his training.

1 completely out of diapers (day and night) and 1 day trained (or working on it) is a huge success in my book.  Wish me luck as we continue but yay for progress.

Update:  I wrote this original blog post several days ago and since then Josh has remained accident free.  ::jumps for joy::  This could really be sticking.  He pees and poops on his own!

Yesterday, Elizabeth told me she had to potty... and then she did!  First time ever.  She's since then been showing major signs so I think we will jump head first into potty training her this week.  I'm not expecting it to go as easily as Josh.  It'll take her longer to connect the feeling with getting to the potty, but she's throwing me major signs so while I'm in potty mode I'm going to run with it.  Who knew we could go from diapers everywhere to potty ready kids.  Wish me luck, I'm headed back in the trenches with Eliz.  Maybe I'm not the world's worst potty trainer.
