First Day of First Grade (dear june)

Dear June,

Today I dropped you off at school on your first day of first grade.  I hope you rock it, and I'm pretty certain you will.  You tend to do that, rock things.  You are a happy, confident boy eager to learn.  You were nervous this morning, though, because you are just only 6 and I'm sending you off into the world on your own. The whole school day seems very long for you.  I think you will do well though.  If you miss me, you know what to do.  Reach into your pocket and hold onto this:

I gave you a token before Kindergarten too.  You needed it for the first 2 days and then you fell into the groove and learned to love school.  But in the times you miss me, it's your secret link back to me.  I think the same thing will happen this year and you won't need me for long, but it makes me happy that you want it to start off the year.  You still need me... years will clip by and soon enough you won't, but you do now and I like that.

I do you have a wonderful day.  I hope you want to tell me all about it when you get off the bus.  I hope that you are nice to the kids in your class, the old and the new.  I hope you be a friend when someone needs it.  I hope you are never the mean kid.  I hope you love the cafeteria and big recess yard.  I hope you love your teacher as much as you loved Mrs. Confer.  I saw her today.  She smiled and waved.  I bet she misses you and your new teacher will grow to love you like she did.  I hope you love what you learn and I can't wait to watch your skills just take off.  I can't wait to get your art projects and hear about the school events this year.  I am excited for you and I hope it is a wonderful year.

You sat as your desk comfortably and didn't look worried or cry when I left.  A bunch of other kids looked worried.  I helped them find their seats and introduced them to the kids at their table.  I hope they have good days too.  First grade looks very overwhelming, judging by the little faces I saw today.  I didn't get to talk to your teacher, but she smiled and said hello in passing.  I bet she's wonderful.

Good luck this year, little man.  Learn and grow and thrive.  Have fun too.  I will see you at the bus stop!
