A few months ago, I got a bug in my ear to want to change the boys' room. I added a crib to their room and bunked their beds. I bought a crib set that matched their walls and bedding and it happened to have a nautical theme. ::lightbulb:: I can change the sport decor of their room into nautical. That's how it all started...
Then my mind switched to Elizabeth's room. Since we know we are having a girl, it will be a while (at least a little while) until we have a baby boy so WHY do we need to keep the neutral nursery theme going? Plus, Elizabeth is 2, so does she really need nursery decor? Nah.
So I searched. I wanted to keep her basic bedding and wall color, but integrate girly colors. Enter Pottery Barn's Penelope Collection.
I searched the internet for pictures of rooms that were doing in Penelope, for inspiration and I began to swap out her old Wendy Bellisimo Honey Bee decor for Penelope inspired decor. Here are the before and afters:
I do want to note, that I adore the Honey Bee stuff... I've just used it for 3 kids and for 5 years so enough was enough. :) It's fun to have a girly room going.
My painted letters... I scored a sale at Michael's and bought the letters for $1 each (usually $4!) and the paint for $0.50 each bringing the grand total to $7 for the finished product. AWESOME.
For the hutch, I swapped out the light shade ($4 Walmart), wall art (I used my letter paint and poster board to make bird art), and I ditched the big bee painting. The baskets, blankets, and changing pad already matched. Score.
I changed out the curtains. This was my biggest investment... rod ($12 Walmart) and curtain ($50 Overstock.com)

I changed out the ribbon on her bow holder ($4 Michaels) and her wall letters (mentioned above) as well as added some throw pillows ($20 ebay)
All I changed in her bedding was the crib skirt ($15 ebay). Nana will be supplying more coordinating crib sheets for Christmas. :)
Lastly, I moved her pom poms to this corner of the room. ;)
Done!! There is a toddler bed in her room as well that she will... at some point... move to. She's content in the crib and is my best sleeper EVER (and I tend to have decent sleepers bc I'm a sleep nazi) so I'm going to let her lead that transition. Her toddler bed has a white pillow and comforter so it matches the new decor already. :)
It's so fun to walk into a fresh room. I love how light it seems and I was crossing my fingers that the yellow would look ok with this theme. All the rooms I saw online had either white or pale pink walls. The yellow works though. :) Phew!!
Now onto the boys' room... June has x'ed the nautical idea and wants super heros. Goodness. I have allowed super hero back packs and action figures. I have even let ::gasp:: a few character shirts into his waredrobe, but I don't think I'm ready for a super hero room. I'm weighing whether I can do a super hero room tactfully, and if I can keep their current bedding and wall colors... I just don't know. Nautical could be so magazine-esque. ::sigh:: ;) Time will tell. For now, I've spent enough money on decor for quite a while. Next up, Christmas gifts! I need to figure out a way to save for them and get them bought before baby comes!

Sorry, I laughed out loud when I read "super hero room tactfully" ;)Good luck with that ;)
But LOVE Eliz's room! Great job :)
I love the room! Even just the new letters and bow holder make it seem so much brighter. I'll call you when I'm ready for room updating ; )
I love love love before and after blogs. Go you! So awesome to see!
You are so awesome about decorating! I honestly can't envision decor... my house as you know has no rhyme or reason lol.
As for super hero themes. I had a friend take a some of those basic puzzles from the dollar store. Glue the finished puzzle to some cardboard and hung them up on the walls. Kids got to participate and had fun. Buy 2-4 of those and hang them by their beds. For kids their ages it would count as a theme? Then maybe you could sneak the nautical for the rest of the room? :-P But again, I'm so redneck when it comes to decor so you probably shouldn't listen to my ideas hahaha! Good luck! :-D
I think I figured out the super hero room... my mom offered to pay for the transformation since she didn't get to follow through on June's birthday gift. I got new curtains, Spider Man sheets, a spider web vinyl wall art piece, and a Spider Man canvas that matches his room colors already. It is going to be subtle, but I just couldn't do "characters" overtly. The puzzle idea is really cool though... I am going to keep that in mind if there are any areas of the room that are still lacking. :)
