Oh, Joshua...

If you go back in this blog to 2009-2012 you will see posts about Josh's medical mystery.  He was super fussy (after being a very mellow baby), was falling off his growth curve and his diapers were not normal.  Very long story short, we got answers after working with a pediatric GI and got Josh's health back on track.

A few years later, he was still small and we were referred to a pediatric endocrinologist.  We did a bone scan and Josh's bones are growing at a slower rate, but the only health ramifications were that he probably won't be much above 5'8"/5'9".  No biggie, Jim is about that height anyway so that's not abnormal for our genes.

Fast forward to the last year or so... Josh had been back on my radar.  Mom intuition is REAL ya'll.  Pay attention to it.  I have not worried at all for any of my other kids.  Yet, Josh stays in the back of my mind.  He is still small and skinny, but he's holding his own curve (up to a whopping 17th percentile for height... 9th for weight lol).  He also can't seem to handle life nearly as well as the other kids.  Physically, Josh is TOUGH.  He is (unknowingly) training himself to be a stunt double.  He jumps and barrel-rolls over things, crashes to the ground, self taught a back handspring, spends time on the trampoline year round, doesn't tire easily, and watches less screen than any of my kids.

He's hearty... he's healthy... buuuuuut the other side of Josh is that he get overwhelmed very easily, small hurdles can send Josh into a puddle of tears, he gets headaches frequently and just seems, off.

In December we went in for his well-check and this time when I described his headaches, something didn't sit right with the doctor.  We decided to keep a headache journal and re-check him in a month.  From December 5th to January 4th, we logged his headaches.  We found that he has smaller "come and go" headaches and "bad" headaches that he needs to rest, dark, and medicine to treat.   Out of those 30 days, Josh had 13 days of headaches.  We were referred on to a pediatric neurologist and were amazingly able to get him an appointment for February 4th!  They book 6 months out, but must have just had a cancellation.

Josh and I told the neurologist the same things that we told his pediatrician and he agreed.  Both doctors said that Josh is on the path to developing migraines.  In fact the diagnosis in his chart is migraines.  My understanding is that these are baby migraines that will take shape and increase in severity as he ages.  We will see his neurologist every 6 months and it's a non-emergent thing at this point.  I'm reassured that we are in the right hands to monitor his headaches.

The neurologist requested some blood work and an MRI to rule out other health things.  The blood work came back as Josh having a vitamin D deficiency.  The neurology office called to let me know the results and requested that Josh meet with the dietitian.  I don't know what to expect at that appointment, but it's this Thursday so we shall find out.

His MRI is tomorrow... fingers and toes crossed that this will be a veeeeeeeeeeery expensive test that will tell us that Josh's noggin is 100% normal.

The other small piece is that Josh has elevated cholesterol.  I don't know what is going on in that boy's body, but I'm bound and determined to find out.  Stay tuned!
